work-in-progress-self-portrait-oil-painting-print-open-edition
WORK IN PROGRESS - SELF PORTRAIT - OIL PAINTING PRINT (OPEN EDITION)

I spend most of my time painting other people and telling their stories. For this portrait, I turned the canvas toward myself.

I painted this self portrait for the cover of my memoir, Work in Progress. The visible drips, thin layers of paint, and exposed canvas were intentional. I wanted it to feel unfinished, because I’m still growing, still learning, and still becoming the person I want to be.

Over the years, I’ve painted self portraits as a way to check in with myself, to capture who I am and where I am in life. This one became the cover of my memoir, Work in Progress, which makes it especially meaningful to me. It holds so much, my journey from the South Bronx, the experiences I finally put into words, and the person I’ve become along the way.

And now that Work in Progress has become a New York Times bestseller, this portrait means even more to me. It’s the painting that became the cover of a story I once wondered if I’d ever have the courage to share.

If you choose to collect this print, you’re sharing a moment I’ll remember for the rest of my life.
